This post marks the start of a monthly publication of data pulled from dealership DMS systems and our own systems (VehicleLyfe and illumiQUOTE). For this first post, we will compare August data to the full-year stats of 2024. August’s data is from hundreds of thousands of service repair orders and DMS records.
Warranty Coverage in Service & Service Costs

- The average cost of service came down to $494 in August vs. $521 at the end of 2024
- 9.3% of all repair orders were fully covered by warranty compared to 9.1% in 2024
- 12% were partially covered by a warranty, and that is down 4% from the end of 2024
Older Cars in Service

- 17% of repair orders were on cars with more than 100k miles – down from 23.6% in 2024
- 12% of repair orders were on cars 10 years or older – down from 15.5% in 2024
- 8% of repair orders were on cars older than 10 years and more than 100k miles – down from 13.4% in 2024
Older cars drive the average cost of service up, so with August showing reductions in older vehicles being serviced, it is no surprise that the average costs of service would be down.

- For cars with more than 100k miles, the average cost of service was $702 in August – up from $692 in 2024
- For cars 10 years or older, it was $644 – up from $610 in 2024
Loyalty

39% of all services came from customers who bought their car from that dealership. That means dealership sales departments had an opportunity to conquest 61% of all the customers in service to become future sales. In 2024, 63% of total service customers did not buy the car they had serviced at that dealership from that dealership.
